Do Ottawa backsplash outlets need box extenders?
Do Ottawa backsplash outlets need box extenders?
Great practical question that comes up in almost every kitchen backsplash project. Yes, in most cases you will need electrical box extenders when installing a tile backsplash in an Ottawa kitchen — and getting this right is important both for the finished look and for Ontario Electrical Safety Code compliance.
Here is why: when you install tile over drywall, you are adding material thickness between the wall surface and the face of the electrical box. Standard ceramic subway tile at 8 to 10 millimetres thick, plus thinset at another 3 to 5 millimetres, means the face of your outlet or switch box can end up sitting 11 to 15 millimetres behind the finished tile surface. The Ontario Electrical Safety Code requires that electrical boxes be flush with or no more than 6 millimetres behind a non-combustible surface like tile — so a standard box that was flush with your drywall will almost certainly be out of compliance once the tile goes on.
Box extenders (also called box extensions or mud rings) are inexpensive plastic or metal rings that attach to the front of an existing box and bring it forward to the correct depth. They cost a few dollars each at any Ottawa hardware store — Home Depot on Baseline, Rona, or any electrical supply house will have them. The key is to measure your tile thickness plus thinset thickness before you buy, so you get the right depth of extender. Most backsplash installations need a single extender in the 10 to 12 millimetre range.
A few things to keep in mind: turn off the breaker before pulling the outlet or switch forward to install the extender — this is not a job to do live. If your boxes are already crowded with wiring, adding an extender can make things tight, and this is where having an ESA-licensed electrician do a quick check is worthwhile. Also, your outlet cover plates will need to sit flush against the tile face, so the extender depth needs to be accurate — too shallow and the cover plate rocks, too deep and there is a visible gap between the plate and tile.
If you are doing a DIY backsplash installation, handling the box extenders yourself is entirely reasonable — it is straightforward work as long as the power is off. If a licensed electrician is already involved in your renovation for other reasons, have them handle it while they are on site.
