What bathroom tile trends are Ottawa homeowners choosing for 2025 and 2026 renovations?

Ottawa homeowners are gravitating toward several clear trends in bathroom tile for 2025 and 2026, and the common thread is a move toward warmer, more textured, and more intentional-looking tile work that feels less cookie-cutter than the grey-and-white minimalism that dominated the last decade.

Warm-toned tile is the biggest shift. After years of cool greys, stark whites, and icy marble-look porcelain, Ottawa bathrooms are moving toward warmer palettes — soft creams, warm beiges, terracotta, sage greens, and earthy tones. Zellige-style tile (handmade-look Moroccan tile with slightly irregular surfaces and a rich, glazed depth) has exploded in popularity for shower walls and accent areas. The subtle variation in colour and surface texture creates a handcrafted look that mass-produced tile cannot replicate.

Large-format porcelain slabs continue to gain ground, with 24-by-48-inch and even 48-by-96-inch gauged porcelain panels being used for shower walls to create a nearly seamless, groutless look. These require specialized installation — vacuum lifters, precise substrate flatness, and experienced hands — but the visual result is dramatic. In Ottawa, large-format slab installation runs $15 to $30 per square foot for labour due to the specialized skills and tools required.

Textured and three-dimensional wall tile is having a moment. Fluted, ribbed, and sculpted wall tiles add tactile depth and shadow play to bathroom walls, particularly effective behind vanities and in powder rooms. These tiles catch light differently throughout the day, creating a dynamic surface that flat tile cannot match.

Curbless showers with linear drains continue to be one of the most requested bathroom features in Ottawa renovations. The clean, accessible design pairs beautifully with large-format floor tile that flows from the bathroom floor directly into the shower without a step or transition. Beyond aesthetics, curbless showers are practical for aging-in-place planning — a consideration increasingly on the minds of Ottawa homeowners renovating their forever homes.

Wood-look porcelain plank tile remains popular for bathroom floors, especially in Ottawa where the warmth of a wood appearance is appealing in our cold climate, but real hardwood is impractical in wet bathroom environments. The latest generation of wood-look porcelain is remarkably realistic, with textured surfaces that mimic wood grain.

Bold patterned floor tile — geometric encaustic-look porcelain, Moroccan-inspired patterns, and art deco motifs — is being used in powder rooms and half-bathrooms as a statement element. Ottawa homeowners are increasingly treating the powder room as a space to take design risks that they might not choose for a primary bathroom.

The overarching trend is toward bathrooms that feel curated and personal rather than following a single Pinterest aesthetic. Ottawa tile installers are seeing more mixed-material bathrooms — combining two or three complementary tiles in different formats and finishes within the same space for a layered, intentional look.
