How do Ottawa tilers handle backsplash installation around electrical outlets and switches?
Cutting tile precisely around electrical outlets and switches is one of the trickiest parts of any backsplash installation, and how an installer handles it is often the difference between a professional-looking result and an obviously amateur one. Ottawa tilers use a combination of careful measurement, the right cutting tools, and properly sized cover plates to achieve clean results.
The standard approach starts with turning off the power to any circuits in the backsplash area at the breaker panel — this is non-negotiable for safety. The outlet and switch cover plates are removed, and the devices themselves are loosened from the electrical boxes so they sit slightly forward. This allows tile to be installed right up to the edge of the electrical box, with the device and cover plate sitting on top of the tile surface once everything is reinstalled.
For the cuts themselves, most Ottawa tile installers use an angle grinder with a diamond blade to make the L-shaped and U-shaped cutouts needed to fit tile around outlet boxes. A wet saw handles straight cuts, but the notched cuts around outlets require the precision of a handheld grinder. Some installers use a combination of drill holes at the corners of the cutout (using a diamond-tipped hole saw or drill bit) and then connect the holes with straight cuts. For glass tile and delicate materials, a rotary tool with a diamond bit gives the finest control.
The key detail that separates good backsplash work from mediocre work is the gap tolerance around outlet boxes. A skilled installer cuts the tile to leave a gap of no more than 3 to 5 millimetres around the box — small enough that a standard oversized cover plate completely conceals the cut edges. If the cuts are sloppy and the gaps are too wide, even an oversized plate won't cover them, and you end up with visible raw tile edges or gaps. This is one reason backsplash installation around a kitchen with six or eight outlets and switches takes meaningfully longer than tiling a plain wall.
One important detail: after the tile is installed and grouted, the outlet and switch cover plates need to be the oversized (jumbo) size rather than standard size. The tile adds thickness to the wall, and the device now sits slightly recessed compared to its original position. Jumbo cover plates are a few millimetres larger on each side and bridge the gap between the device and the tile surface cleanly. Your installer should mention this, and many Ottawa tilers include the cost of jumbo plates in their quote.
Also worth noting — if the electrical boxes are old or the wiring looks questionable, this is a natural opportunity to have an ESA-licensed electrician update the boxes and wiring before the tile goes up. It is far easier and cheaper to address electrical issues before a beautiful new backsplash covers the wall than after.
